Humankind’s role has always been simultaneous control over and surrender to nature. We want to suck the earth’s oil from its body, to cut down and splinter the earth’s wood to refashion to our liking, but we also yearn to sit by the calm lakeshore and lose ourselves at the foot of the towering forest. It is our nature, our calling, to be ever in this struggle, this violent dance, with the universe that created us—the same one that will one day swallow us up.
Ensnared in this paradox, we have only one choice: live with the resolve for natural harmony and the courage for selfless love.
