When someone asks, “How are you?” and you say, “Fine,” what you really mean is, “Hello.”
The How are you exchange is merely a salutation. And we’ve tacitly agreed to this. So when someone asks the question, we don’t answer in full detail everything really going on underneath. We don’t talk about what our soul aches for.
Which is sad because in these moments we pass up on the chance to have a truly meaningful conversation with someone. To connect. And to practice listening and compassion.
So really though… How are you?
